New marshland map proposal. Safeguards all private patta land but at the same time ensuring the remaining land is safeguarded. Brigade Morgan heights n even Casa grand Hola chennai seems coming inside core marshland area. #Chennai S V Krishna Chaitanya (@Krish_TNIE) This is the #Pallikaranai wetland interim Zone of Influence (ZoI) proposed by the Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority. Taking a dramatic u-turn, the authority has sharply reduced the proposed ZoI from 3,358 hectares to 128.19 hectares. Remember, Pallikaranai, declared a Ramsar site in 2022, is #Chennai 's last major freshwater wetland. It drains a 250 sq. km catchment, absorbs floodwater, recharges groundwater and filters pollutants. Yes, the earlier 1-km buffer was bit of a overstretch affecting several patta landowners, but this latest interim ZoI, I feel is a total compromise. Madras high court will pronounce its verdict tomorrow afternoon.
