#Delhi #ProtestNews 1. I woke up on 10 Oct to a call from a Leftist Indian-turned-American friend. I asked him to think about his own country, not mine. 2. Thankful to the ECI for the 2026 #SIR in #WestBengal . Since the 1990s, we have helplessly watched the CPM and TMC turning my Partition state—created for Hindus in 1947—into a ‘Mini Pakistan’ through the generous distribution of I-cards to Bangladeshi Muslims. Demography changed dramatically in many areas in the last decade alone. Following a strategy adopted from Assam, these ‘illegals-made-legals’ were buying land to prove their rights. The #ECI took the bull by the horns. 3. For those suffering memory loss, here is a quick run-down of how Bengal’s TMC govt tried to sabotage the 2026 SIR. Illegal immigrants were made legal with factory precision. A new term, ‘Baba shopping’, was added to the dictionary. Birth certificates were issued in abundance, linked to imaginary fathers. In one extreme case, over 300 people were listed as the sons of one man. Illegal immigrants were offered a entire set of papers to prove citizenship with unprecedented alacrity. It happened before our eyes. The ECI was right to use software to catch them. The state did not cooperate or provide the requisite staff to the ECI to complete the hearings. The TMC went to court. The Supreme Court took responsibility and deployed 600 or so High Court judges to complete the groundwork. On one occasion, judges ran for their lives from Murshidabad, an area dominated by illegal immigrants. 4. India needs the biometrics-backed National I-Card planned by Rajiv Gandhi. To do that, we must revive the 1955 scheme of NRC. Both were sabotaged by successive governments on purpose. 5. India needs another nationalist force in the Opposition. #Congress had the opportunity to occupy that space and become an alternative to the BJP. But it chose to be ‘cockroached’ and has been losing elections. 6. This is no consolation for governance failures in post-transition West Bengal. Issue-based criticism will continue. But that is no excuse for allowing vested interests to turn it into a ‘Mini Pakistan’ again and weaken the nation.
