A few years ago this lake had shrunk to roughly 16 acres, with encroachments eating into its edges. After HYDRAA cleared them, it has been brought back to about 29.3 acres, nearly double its size. The work goes beyond reclaiming land. Inlets are being built so rainwater flows straight into the lake, and outlets will let excess water out safely once it fills up. That helps control floods in the neighbourhood and recharges groundwater. Bunds, wide walkways, parks, open gyms and play areas are coming up around it, and sewage treatment plants are being fast-tracked to keep sewage out. The lake is also linked to Sunnam Cheruvu and Edulakunta, which together form a chain of water bodies in Madhapur. Restoring them is as much about protecting that natural drainage as it is about open space.
