During the previous #DMK government, Chennai's stormwater drainage infrastructure was reportedly designed to handle around 20 cm of rainfall in a day. Yet, even relatively light rain often resulted in severe waterlogging. DMK ministers themselves had acknowledged that rainfall exceeding 20 cm could lead to flooding on roads. Questions remain over what happened to the ₹4,000 crore special package announced for stormwater drainage works. Despite the lack of cooperation from corporation councillors and the challenges confronting the administration, the TVK government has made efforts to address the situation independently within its first five months in office. Ministers and MLAs are now on the ground, inspecting affected areas and assessing the impact of the rains. It is now up to the virtual warriors to hold those MLAs who have stayed away from the field accountable and urge them to join the ground-level relief and monitoring efforts. Online support must translate into action on the ground.
